I came here with my mum and my best friend in August 2004. It was nice for my first stay in a hotel.
They could have had more local cuisine on offer, but the food was good. It did have its bad points, but they were overshadowed by the good points (big time).
They should have had a disco (which I hear they have now). That way you wouldn't have to leave the hotel to "shake what your mamma gave you".
The staff was great. But they couldn't be paid enough for the amount of hours they put in to make sure our stay was the best that it could be.
I'm going back in August 2005. In my next review, I will let you know if it can get any better! |

What ever else you do in Jamaica, don't waste your money staying at this hotel. To say that this hotel was a disappointment was a complete understatement. The hotel was sold to us as a four-star accommodation, the tickets arrived as a a three-star, yet it was basically a one-star.
When we arrived, the bed was unmade (5:30 pm), the floor tiles were cracked in the bathroom, the bath was grime, and the towels were thin and gray looking.
The food seemed to be cooked in the same black sauce whether it was sweet and sour chicken, stewed pork, beef stew or curried goat. If you wanted a roast dinner, the pork was pink in the middle and red on the bone, the roast chicken was hacked with a cleaver so you had bone splinters in every mouthful.
My partner survived on rice, mashed potatoes and gravy. A friend of ours lived on soup. He supplemented his diet with chocolate and crisps from the shop.
Glasses in the bar were chipped or cracked, and the alternative was cloudy scratched plastic cups. They ran out of rum, coke and other beverages three or four times.
The surfaces that the morning coffee urns were on swarmed with ants, and the milk was curdled. The guava jam at breakfast was moldy twice, and there was no bacon until we asked for it (and then it was swimming in grease).
The band that played every night was called "The Tournodos". They played reggae every night and were so lethargic they hardly moved!
We saw at least three couples move out to other hotels. The day of the powercut, the electricity came back on at 5:00 pm, but they didn't switch the boiler back on until 6:50 pm - no shower.
I also acquired 82 bites and Ian 42 sand flies presumably, we established that nobody could remember when the bar or other areas had been sprayed. The bite I got overnight on my eye was the worse. We had to go to the nurse rather than the doctor (because of the high cost, of course).
To sum things up: It was rundown, scruffy, with unhelpful staff. Have a lovely holiday. Jamaica is a gorgeous place - if you stay at the right hotel. |

We spent this Thanksgiving here. For the price we paid, we got a great location and great rooms. This was a well maintained resort located on the "Hip Strip", just minutes from the airport.
All the rooms had a view of the ocean. Also, the food was served buffet style with a great selection for the picky eaters, nothing fancy just good food.
Montego Beach Resort seemed to still be working out some minor problems with staffing due to occupancy (60%). But if you are looking for a safe, secure place, this is it.
Also, being in Montego Bay, you can easily go on day trips to Negril, Ocho Rios, etc. Going outside the resort was not a problem. We will be heading back to Montego Beach Resort in June 2004. |

I have been vacationing in Jamaica since 1989, usually twice a year, staying exclusively at Montego Beach Resort (formally, Jack Tar Village).
Whether I am traveling alone or with friends, I know that I'll be treated royally by the staff. They are all fantastic - the Executive Staff: General Manager, Human Resource Director; Front Desk Personnel; Activities; Dining Room Staff; Housekeeping; Food and Beverage; and Maintenance - I could go on and on. They are all very gracious and go out of their way to ensure everyone has a wonderful time.
The property is one of the finest in Montego Bay. Each room has a view of the sea, and watching a sunset from your balcony or the beach is a breathtaking experience. The property has two pools, main pool and pool bar, I prefer swimming in the azure water of the Caribbean.
The rooms are clean and comfortable, the food is good, plentiful and always a variety. You have to check out the dessert table, I try to stay away from it, but usually cave in.
The hotel is located on what is called the "Hip Strip" which is a great place to shop. Margaretville is a fun place to visit and is a short walk from the hotel. If you don't want to venture out alone, one of the Activities Staff can accompany you.
Every night there is entertainment on the patio deck. There could be local bands and other local talent, fashion shows, crab races, a variety of games in which guests are participants.
I highly recommend you give Montego Beach Resort a try. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. It's a nice size (131 rooms) that allows you to get to know the staff and other guests; you won't be just a number. I hope to see you at my "home away from home" in March. |
